So why name my business Wheal Netherton?

Those of you that know me, will be aware that I’m very proud to be Cornish, with its history and way of life that is unique to anywhere in the world. So me being me, what else would I call it? Wheal in the Cornish language means “Work”, as you can see at various places of industry throughout the Dutchy Wheal Crofty, Wheal Northey and Wheal Martyn for example.

Hi, I’m Tristan and I have worked in the IT industry for the last 18, almost 19 years, and it’s time for a change. I have gained a number of skills throughout my life, in particular from my grandparents, both of whom worked in separate industries.

One grandfather was a Shutter Board Captain at ECLP, as well as a qualified carpenter. He taught me many wood working skills and techniques, including laying screeds and concreting, from a very early age. He was also a total perfectionist and this instilled in me the ‘check it twice’ attitude with everything I do, as I hear his jovial criticism in all I undertake.

My other grandfather was a qualified decorator and dry liner, working all his life in the building industry. I often worked with Pop on my school holidays that ranged from large commercial developments to home extension.

Whilst at secondary school and at college, I worked with a builder, Paul Knight Construction. I was his labourer, and over the years of working with Paul we carried out various building jobs from renovations to new builds.

Finally I love boats and have taken courses in boat building at Lyme Regis Boat Building Academy. I regularly work on the Mevagissey Gigs, keeping them structurally ship shape, and looking amazing
